Australian and New Zealand Media Landscape
Newspapers:
Major metropolitan newspapers, combined with their online presence, are major players in the media landscape. Two main conglomerates Fairfax (Sydney Morning Herald, Sun Herald, The Age, Financial Review, Illawarra Mercury, Newcastle Herald) and News Limited (Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, The Australian, Courier Mail, Herald Sun, Sunday Herald Sun, Adelaide Advertiser, Perth Now, The Mercury) publish most major newspapers across the country.
The Internet is becoming increasingly important with online versions of major newspapers receiving higher visitation/readership numbers than their print version. All major and most regional newspapers maintain an online site.
Australia has one News Wire service Australian Associated Press. Travel stories released on AAP are often used in over ten newspapers around the country.
Television Networks:
Australia has three commercial free-to-air television networks Nine, Ten and Seven and two public television stations ABC and SBS. Australia also has two cable (pay-tv) networks Foxtel and Austar. Approximately three million Australian households currently subscribe to cable television.
Radio Networks:
Radio is an important medium for communicating with Australians with almost eight in 10 Australians listening to commercial radio every week. There are currently about 261 commercial radio stations on air. Other stations include non-commercial such as ABC radio and community stations. Major players include Australian Radio Network, Radio DMG, Southern Cross Broadcasting and Austereo. For more information visit Commercial Radio Australia.
